The branch of the path that leads from "Hell's Half Acre" passes behind the VFW building, as shown in this 1982 photo. The path then passes through a tunnel under the Eliot Bridge, shown in the background. The park bench in this photo is placed, like many along these paths, so that people getting up from the bench walk out into the path. That is OK on a path used only by pedestrians but not on one used by bicyclists. In this location, it would make more sense to place the bench on the river side of the path (to the right in the photo), facing away from the path toward the river. the next photo shows the bridge from just past the building on the left andl ooking across from left to right in this photo.
